BARNSLEY Youth Choir has been put forward for a Proud of Barnsley award for its exceptional achievement.

The choir will compete against some of the world's best at the World Choir Games in Riga, Latvia next month having raised £20,000 to be able to do so.

Musical director Mat Wright will take a group of about 50 of the older children and will be joined by a Chronicle reporter who will follow their progress.

The choir has been nominated by supporter Ann Moffatt, of Voluntary Action Barnsley, who said the group was 'inspirational'.

In her nomination, Ann said the choir was founded in February 2009 by Keith Norton, who died in December.

It consists of more than 200 young people from across Barnsley who are supported by dedicated volunteers.

The choir performed at the Olympic Village, has twice hosted the Miraculum Girls Choir from Kecskemet Kodaly School in Hungary and recently joined the Honley Male Voice Choir at Huddersfield Town Hall.

It produced and sold a Christmas CD which raised £10,000 for the Barnsley Hospice.

Ann said: "Their achievements so far have been outstanding and these are just a few. They are fabulous ambassadors and we should so proud they represent and perform for Barnsley."
