The winner of our DIY Haircut Disasters competition has been announced.

As lockdown draws on many of our readers have turned to having a go at their own haircut. We asked people to send in a before and after picture of their attempts to be in with a chance of winning £100 and to have their winnings match-funded as a donation to their chosen charity.

After a week of voting, the winner is Dean Hargreaves who entered with a photo of a chunk shaved out of his hair.

“I can’t believe it,” said Dean, 51, of Ridings Avenue, Smithies. “This was the first time I had ever cut my own hair and I sat down and cut all my hair on one setting and thought I had done a good job.

“I went to the bathroom to check it over and saw I had a patch that looked a little thicker than the rest so I went back and grabbed the clippers to try and fix it.

“I hadn’t realised that I had taken the guard off when I put it down so when I went to fix it I ended up shaving a big chunk out of my hair.”

Dean had to shave the rest of his head to try and rectify the problem, and said his story got a good laugh out of his friends.

“They couldn’t believe it when I told them,” he added. “I’m never cutting my own hair again, I will leave it to the professionals from now on.”

Dean will receive £100 and has asked that the donation be made to Cancer Research.
