A BARNSLEY air cadet had the ride of his life when he took to the skies for a special flight in the skies above North Wales.

Corporal Tom Pledger, from 148 Barnsley Squadron, was selected to fly in a Hawk T1 aircraft - the jet used by the Red Arrows - after being voted the best cadet during the squadron's annual camping trip.

Not only did he get to fly as a passenger, he even had a short time at the controls.

Grasping the rare opportunity with both hands, the 15-year-old, underwent a medical, kit fitting and briefing before jetting off down the runway at RAF Valley in Holyhead.
