BARNSLEY'S industrial history will be explored in a new art exhibition at Elsecar Heritage Centre. Black Gold at the Hive Gallery opens tomorrow and features artworks relating to coal mining.

Patrick Murphy, one of the artists to feature in the exhibition, said: "The title Black Gold references the historical impact and value that coal had to Barnsley in terms of its industrial history.

"Barnsley became known as the heart of the South Yorkshire coalfield and past generations toiled and risked their lives to pull this black rock from the ground."

Accompanying Patrick's work in the exhibition will be pieces by contemporary Barnsley-based artists John Ledger, Jo Pearson, Mikk Murray and Barrie Jones.

The work will reflect the artists' own personal relationships with the town and its history. The exhibition, which features wall pieces, sculptures and floor installations, runs until March 7.
