AMATEUR boxing trainer Ken Waddington is after a bit of girl power.

Ken's club Keel Amateur Boxing Club has moved premises so it can cope with a greater and more regular demand.

The club, which was only formed last year, had been based behind the Keel Inn pub on Canal Street but that was proving problematic.

Head coach Ken, 64, from Highfield Avenue, Athersley, says the new gym at Harborough Hill Business Park is more fit for their requirements. All he needs now is a few girls.

"I'd be very keen to get some girls into the gym because I've got a stable of 19 lads at the moment," said Ken, who is also a regional coach for Yorkshire.

"Girls from Barnsley can fight and I'm sure they would be able to box too.

"The new gym is a lot more suited to us. We had to share the old gym with other groups and the times we were allocated meant that some lads couldn't get there in time from work.

"We were a little bit restricted in what we could do but some lads have come on a ton regardless since they joined up.

"Now we have an outside and when the weather is nice like it has been this week we can do circuits outside, too."

For the time being the club will remain called Keel ABC but Ken will give the boxers a chance to rename the club at the end of the current season in six weeks.

The club trains Monday-Thursday between 6.30 and 8pm. Tuesday evening sessions are for carded boxers only.
