Barnsley Music Service is to move to the Civic next year, according to a council report.
It shows Barnsley Council wants to take out a three year lease from April for workspace, access to additional meeting rooms and storage facilities at the Hanson Street building.
Barnsley Music Service is currently based at the former Grove Street school site, Oakwell, which dates from the 1900s, and is shared with Adult Learning for teaching purposes. The report says the Adult Learning service will continue to support the music service by sharing the workspace at the Civic.
Under the terms of the lease, the rent will be £19,920 per year, along with running costs of about £15,000 a year. This will save the the council about £12,000 from the service's existing yearly budget of £47,020.
When the service has transferred to the Civic, the Grove Street premises will no longer be needed and the council will look to dispose of it, the report says.
The Civic reopened in 2009 after an extensive refurbishment, having been closed for 11 years. It is now owned by Barnsley Civic Enterprise Ltd, a charity set up to manage the Civic for the purpose of promoting the arts.
Other options for the location of the service have been looked at including it remaining at Grove Street but the council would have to continue to undertake any major repairs required. Another approach would be to deliver the service from advanced learning centres throughout the borough. However, the cost of providing the service in this way exceeds that of a move to the Civic and there is also insufficient storage facilities at the ALCs to accommodate the music service's requirements.
