Plans have been drawn up for a £25m supermarket across the road from ASDA which will create 300 new jobs, the Chronicle can exclusively reveal.

The Peel Group is about to submit its plans to the council for the 130,000 sq ft store on the junction of Twibell Street and Old Mill Lane. It is not known which supermarket chain will take the store.

The developer this week said the store could open as soon as Christmas next year, but an obstacle stands in the way - a giant gas holder in the middle of the proposed site.

A spokesman for the National Grid said there was no plan to decommission it and it cannot be moved.
