A late goal from Portuguese striker Nuno Gomes condemned Barnsley to a 2-1 loss at Blackburn Rovers on Tuesday night.

The Reds produced a wonderful first half performance, dominated the game and took the lead through a superb Jacob Mellis goal on 32 minutes. The midfielder smashed into the top corner from 15 yards after Chris Dagnall dragged down Martin Cranie's ball.

But Blackburn got an equaliser against the run of play on the strike of half-time when former Barnsley striker Jordan Rhodes swivelled and finished superbly.

The second half was more even but Barnsley could have won it through Marlon Harewood who dragged wide from the edge of the box.

But it was Rovers replacement Gomes, who has played 79 times for Portugal, tapped in a cross from Fabio Nunes in the 85th minute.
