HUNDREDS of striking public sector workers took to the streets of Barnsley as part of the dispute with the government over pay, pensions and cuts.
Teachers, council staff, firefighters and civil servants were among those taking part.
Dozens of schools, as well as council offices and libraries around the town were forced to close.
Unison steward Simon Tewson stood on the picket line in Regent Street.
Simon, from Elsecar who works for South Yorkshire Pensions Authority, explained the picket lines included a host of international trade unionists.
He said the strike was mainly about pay.
He said: "Following a three year pay freeze and a pay cut the government has this year put a one per cent pay cap on any increase."
