IT was once considered to be one of Barnsley's best working men's clubs - in its heyday Ashfield WMC in Kendray hosted all the top turns and hosted concerts seven days a week.

But recent hard time and dwindling takings have forced trustees to put the place up for sale - lock, stock and barrels.

The Doncaster Road club, which presently operates as a freehouse having been sold to trustees in 2006, has been put on the market with Westlake and Co Chartered Surveyors for £150,000.

The sale includes a lounge, games and concert room, large cellar and a three bedroom flat.

Accounts show net bar sales have fallen consistently from £287,140 in 2011 to £167,029 last year.

Barnsley Council confirmed to the Chronicle that there is a restriction in the sale which states the property is not to be used for any other purpose than a working men's club.

Any application to have this covenant removed or lifted would be at the discretion of Barnsley Council and would be subject to a re-valuation of the property.

The council would then be entitled to a fee to reflect any uplift in value of the property.

No-one at the club wanted to comment on the sale.
