One of the main roads out of Barnsley town centre will be closed for the next six weeks.
From Monday contractors will start to replace 171 metres of ageing water pipe on Dodworth Road between the junctions of Lancaster Street and the Town End roundabout.
The work is part of an ongoing project to improve drinking water quality and reduce the number of bursts along the underground pipe network.A one way temporary traffic restriction will be in place throughout the project.
That will allow traffic to travel from Dodworth Road towards the Town End roundabout, but will not allow entry to Dodworth Road from the roundabout.
Diversions will be in place along Westway, Sheffield Road, Park Road and Broadway. Lancaster Street will also be closed at the junction with Dodworth Road.
Project manager, Mike Tunnicliffe said: “This work is essential to ensure we maintain the highest quality of drinking water for our customers, and to prevent incidents of discolouration of the water supply.
We ask residents and drivers to bear with us whilst these essential works are completed.”
In total, almost 3km of water pipe has been replaced so far across Barnsley and by the time the whole project is complete, almost 5.5km of pipe will have been replaced.
Some customers’ water supplies may be affected during this work, but if Yorkshire Water need to turn off water they will contact individual customers at least 48 hours in advance.
