The excitement found in the pages of Fifty Shades of Grey has prompted a rise in visitors to Pulse and Cocktails on Doncaster Road, according to the store's director Sally Boothby.

It is an erotic novel by British author E L James and was first released on the internet.

Speaking in this week's Chronicle, sex shop director Sally, 31, said sales of bondage items and sex toys had trebled in the last fortnight and she puts it down to women wanting their partners to 'take charge in the bedroom' like the books' main character, Christian Grey.

"We've had our store in Barnsley for six years and it's incredible how many women are visiting the store for the first time, as a direct result of reading these books," she said.

"Women are sheepishly entering the shop, rather flush faced, claiming never to have been in a sex shop before in their lives but are desperate to get hold of the sexy items, so they can bring to life the fantasies they've read in the books."
