AS IT HAPPENED
  • 12:22pm
Good afternoon and welcome to the Chronicle's live text coverage of Barnsley's FA Cup third round game at home to League Two Tranmere Rovers from 1.30pm.
  • 12:22pm
Team news is expected at 12.30pm. Jordan Williams has been back in training after injury while Alex Mowatt, Conor Chaplin and Brad Collins could all return after Covid-19 related absences.

Brad Collins replaces Jack Walton in goal, Herbie Kane comes in for the departed Matty James and Conor Chaplin returns in place of Luke Thomas. Alex Mowatt back after isolating following positive Covid test. Jordan Williams and Toby Sibbick are on the bench.
  • 12:40pm

  • 12:41pm
Tranmere subs: Murphy, Morris, Blackett-Taylor, Banks, Hayde, Burton, Ellis, Nugent
  • 12:44pm
Strong side as expected for Barnsley. With free weeks either side, makes sense to give first choice players a full run-out and keep them in a good rhythm.
  • 12:44pm
Looks like about six normal first team players are missing for Tranmere including experienced duo Peter Clarke and Liam Feeney. Normally they would be just as experienced in Championship as Barnsley. They have had injuries and Covid problems.
  • 12:46pm
There will be no replay, with the match settled by extra-time and penalties in the event of a draw.
  • 12:52pm
Tranmere have the worst record of any club at Oakwell. They have not won any of their 26 visits, losing 15 while scoring 18 goals with 50 conceded.
  • 12:55pm
Their manager Keith Hill also has some unhappy memories as, after being sacked as Reds boss there seven years ago this week, his returns with Rochdale brought defeats by scores of 5-0, 6-1 and 2-1.
  • 1:00pm
Hill took over at Barnsley in 2011 and won 19 of 75 games, losing 41, before managing Rochdale and Bolton Wanderers.
  • 1:02pm
Tranmere had won five successive games when Hill was appointed in November and he was victorious in his first three but they have won just one of their last five League Two games.
  • 1:04pm
They are currently 13th in the fourth tier after their game at Colchester United was called off due to positive Covid-19 issues in both camps. Rovers travelled to Essex but the game was called off an hour before kick-off.
  • 1:07pm
Head coach Valerien Ismael said: "I have seen some clips. They play football. They have a philosophy. You can see the formation and the principle out of possession and in possession. They have nothing to lose and they will come to win. We know we need a great performance to win."
  • 1:11pm
Ismael added: "We will use the FA Cup game to prepare us for the next Championship game at home to Swansea City. We want to go through in the cup. We have to win this game. I want to put out the best players that I have. I don't want to try anything different. We prepare in the same way as in the Championship."
  • 1:16pm
Barnsley have not won at home in the FA Cup third round or later since the week after Hill was sacked when they beat Burnley 1-0 thanks to Danny Rose's late strike.
  • 1:16pm
That was their most recent progression to the fourth round until last season when Gerhard Struber's side won at Crewe Alexandra in the third round then lost 4-2 at Portsmouth.
  • 1:23pm
Ismael's first game in English football was for Crystal Palace in a 3-0 FA Cup win over Leicester City in January 1998, before he played in both legs of a fifth round tie with Arsenal that went to a replay.
  • 1:23pm
He said: "We won against Leciester at home and it was my first game in England so it was a great feeling. In all the countries where I was, the cups are important. I won the cup in France and Germany."
  • 1:23pm
Attacking midfielder Otis Khan, who made three League One appearances from the bench in 2016 for Barnsley, signed for Tranmere in the summer after spells with Yeovil, Mansfield and Newport. He has not played since December 12. He is starting today
  • 1:24pm
They also have Ollie Banks, the son of Barnsley legend Ian, who is on the bench today.

8 A creative ball over the top by Conor Chaplin on Barnsley's left is collected by Dominik Frieser, but the forward is under pressure and can't find a shot. It's cleared before Alex Mowatt overhits his attempt to find Callum Styles who was running down the wing. No clear chances so far.

  • 2:03pm
32 Dominik Frieser gets to a rebound after Cauley Woodrow's strike is blocked by Scott Davies, but the forward is stretching and can only get a weak foot to the ball which is cleared by George Ray before it gets to the goal.
  • 2:06pm
35 Cauley Woodrow with perhaps Barnsley's best chance, a header that creeps wide of the far post. The forward had played a good ball down the line for Dominik Frieser to advance down the left side, getting into the box for his return cross. Very close.
  • 2:08pm

  • 2:11pm

  • 2:14pm
43 Dominik Frieser runs the ball out after a corner, and plays a good ball in-field to Herbie Kane from the right wing. The midfielder finds Callum Styles on the opposite side, who plays Conor Chaplin in - but the forward's shot is blocked by George Ray.
