Barnsley , RotherhamCOMMENT: Rare derby big game for both clubs
A 7.15PM kick-off on a Friday is rare, as is a league meeting between Barnsley and Rotherham United, with the Reds desperate to make home league wins less of a rarity in tonight’s important South Yorkshire derby.
Having been victorious in just one of 12 league fixtures at Oakwell since February, this feels like a must-win match for the Reds with games to come against Wigan and Reading – who both have excellent records at...

Wolfe no longer contracted but Barnsley are still helping him
DARRELL Clarke has confirmed Matty Wolfe is no longer contracted to Barnsley but the club are still helping him recover from a major injury sustained almost two years ago.
The 24-year-old midfielder, who came through the Reds academy from primary school age then played 33 first team games, suffered a serious knee injury in January last year and has not yet fully recovered.
Wolfe was mentioned on the club’s retained list last summer as someone...
Boss praises Roberts leadership and Phillips confidence
Darrell Clarke praised his goal-scorers from Saturday, as well as the collective team effort, as Barnsley secured a 3-1 win at Port Vale in the FA Cup.
Centre-back Marc Roberts opened the scoring with a header in the 17th minute, capping his 100th game for the club with his fourth goal of the season.
Head coach Clarke told the Chronicle: “I am loving his leadership skills at the minute. His performances have been excellent for...
‘I am back to myself and have a lot more to give’ – Humphrys
STEPHEN Humphrys says he finally felt ‘fully sharp’ in the home game against Charlton Athletic last week.
The 27-year-old forward, who signed on the final day of the summer transfer window, has made six starts and four substitute appearances, scoring at Burton Albion and at home to Wycombe Wanderers. He had not had a pre-season so has been building up his match fitness since joining the club. He told the Chronicle: “Fitness is one thing...
Barnsley to visit most familiar opponent and Clarke’s ex club
BOTH Barnsley and Darrell Clarke will face very familiar opposition when they visit Port Vale in the FA Cup tomorrow but insist they are not dwelling on last year’s embarrassing expulsion from the world famous competition.
The Reds have played Vale 118 times – more than any other club in their history – with 50 wins, 21 draws and 47 defeats.
Clarke was in charge of the Staffordshire club for more than two years, until...
Talking points from trophy loss
Analysis of Barnsley's 3-1 home defeat in the EFL Trophy on Tuesday to Doncaster Rovers.
BARNSLEY’S MOST POINTLESS EVER GAME?
OF THE roughly 3,000 first team games staged at Oakwell since 1888, this must have been the most meaningless.
A dead rubber in the final group fixture of a competition few supporters take interest in until the Wembley final is in sight, having suffered the humiliation of being knocked out with a game to...
Talking points from win at Shrewsbury
Analysis from Barnsley's 2-0 win at Shrewsbury Town, with Jon Russell and Max Watters netting either side of half-time.
REDS CRUISE TO WIN OVER STRUGGLING SHREWS
THE TAMING of the Shrews is the obvious headline for this one-sided match while Barnsley goalkeeper Ben Killip could have read a chapter or two of the Shakespeare play during the game without imperilling his team.
Shrewsbury were so shockingly bad that it is hard to assess how good...
Parekh backs ‘slow starter’ Clarke to lead top six push
BARNSLEY chairman Neerav Parekh has backed ‘slow starter’ Darrell Clarke to have the club competing for promotion from League One this season and added: ‘from a financial perspective and football perspective we need to get up.’
The Reds are currently eighth after 12 games, having picked up four points this week following some poor performances before the international break.
Indian businessman Parekh, who is also the majority owner of the club, is in his third...
We hit the reset button – O'Keeffe
COREY O’Keeffe says Barnsley ‘hit the reset button’ during their two-week break from league action before this week’s games.
The Reds had a fortnight away from league games following a 2-0 loss at Huddersfield Town in which they were very poor. They have since won at Blackpool and drawn at home to Charlton with improved performances.
Wing-back O’Keeffe told the Chronicle: “We had a meeting as soon as we came in after the Huddersfield game...
Reds look for 2nd league home win when Addicks visit
Barnsley are determined to improve their faltering home form when they host Charlton Athletic from 7.45pm on Tuesday.
The Reds ended a four-match winless run with a 2-1 success at Blackpool on Saturday.
They are unbeaten at Oakwell in five games in all competitions but have only won once there in the league this season, against Bristol Rovers last month.
That is also their only home victory in the league since February,...
MATCH PREVIEW: Recent Bloomfield Road trips have been crucial
BARNSLEY’S last two league trips to Blackpool didn’t end well for their head coaches.
The away end turned on Markus Schopp and Neill Collins during defeats at Bloomfield Road in September 2021 and April this year respectively.
Schopp was sacked within weeks and Collins within hours of a 3-2 loss which saw his off-form side go 3-0 down in the penultimate league game of last season. There is nothing at all to suggest that Darrell...
No 'easy fixes' with Hourihane to focus on coaching
DARRELL Clarke has repeated that Conor Hourihane will focus more on coaching than playing and only be used in the team in an injury crisis.
The Irish midfielder, a legend from his first spell at Barnsley, returned for a second spell at Oakwell as player/coach last summer but has not played since two appearances in August.
He has been promoted to a more senior position in Clarke’s coaching staff following the departure of Dean Whitehead. ...
Nwakali thrilled to finally make debut in English football
KELECHI Nwakali was delighted to finally play a game in English football this week, eight years after first signing for a club in this country, and is hoping to become a regular in the Barnsley side.
The midfielder joined Premier League giants Arsenal on a five-year deal in 2016, having been named Player of the Tournament at the Under 17 World Cup which he helped Nigeria win.
But he never played for the Gunners, partly...
‘Spirit fantastic’ as Reds aim to prove top 6 class
DARRELL Clarke admits he and his Barnsley players still need to prove they can compete for the top six in League One this season but added: ‘the spirit in the camp is fantastic.’
The Reds have collected 15 points from their first ten games – the fewest at that stage in their last four seasons at League One level since Lee Johnson was in charge in 2015. They lost 2-0 at Huddersfield Town in the...
'Decent work-out' says Clarke after Reds go out of trophy
Darrell Clarke said his much-changed Barnsley team got a ‘decent work-out’ in their 2-0 loss at Huddersfield Town which knocked them out of the EFL Trophy on Tuesday night.
After both sides changed the majority of their players from Saturday’s league match with the same result, the hosts netted twice in the second half.
Clarke told the Chronicle: “The boys worked really hard. We spent a lot of time without the ball but...
Talking points from Huddersfield loss
Analysis of Barnsley's 2-0 loss at Huddersfield Town on Saturday. The Reds conceded in the 83rd and 96th minutes.
DUFF EASILY COMES OUT ON TOP IN REUNION
THE LAST time Barnsley fans saw Michael Duff, the general feeling was that they could not have been more proud of their team.
Duff’s Reds had just lost the play-off final in agonising circumstances at Wembley but performed superbly with ten men for 70 minutes at the end...
Clarke wants more quality and consistency
DARRELL Clarke says his Barnsley team needs to play ‘a hell of a lot better’ and is demanding more consistency.
The head coach has been disappointed with aspects of his side’s performances in the opening nine games of the season, which have yielded 15 points and left them seventh in League One.
He has been particularly frustrated this week following the home draws with Stockport County and Wycombe Wanderers, saying the players must be better...
Late scorer Roberts believes his experience is making impact
MARC Roberts enjoyed his first goal at Oakwell in more than seven years in midweek and believes his experience is helping Barnsley pick up points they may have missed out on last season.
The centre-back, 34, levelled in the 89th minute to secure a 2-2 draw for his hometown club at home to Wycombe Wanderers on Tuesday. Roberts told the Chronicle: “It was nice. I went to celebrate but then everyone realised: ‘let’s get back...
Reds level twice in draw with Wycombe
Barnsley came from behind twice to salvage a 2-2 draw at home to Wycombe Wanderers on Tuesday night.
After a very poor first half from both sides, Wycombe took the lead within seconds of the re-start but substitute Stephen Humphrys levelled before the hour. Wycombe scored again on 85 minutes but Marc Roberts levelled on 89 for the Reds who are now seventh with 15 points from nine games.
Barnsley did not play...
