Barnsley won 2-0 at home to League Two Tranmere Rovers in the third round of the FA Cup at Oakwell on Sunday.

Michal Helik broke the deadlock just before the hour then Cauley Woodrow made sure of the win in the 94th minute with a penalty after Luke Thomas was fouled.

It was an unspectacular game which saw the League Two visitors compete well but miss key first half chances, while the Reds produced a professional performance.

They will now discover their opponents for the fourth round tomorrow evening on BT Sport 1 from 7.10pm.

Valerien Ismael made three changes from the side that lost at Norwich City in the Championship eight days earlier. Brad Collins replaced Jack Walton in goal, Herbie Kane came in for the departed Matty James and Conor Chaplin returned in place of Luke Thomas. Jordan Williams and Toby Sibbick were on the bench.

Tranmere, who have had Covid-19 issues as well as injuries, were without six of their normal first team squad and could only name eight substitutes out of a possible nine.

After a quiet start to the game, Chaplin had the first shot in the 12th minute but his 25-yard effort whistled past the top right corner. Chaplin then produced a good finish to put the ball in the back of the net after bringing down a long ball but the flag was up for offside.

Tranmere had the first shot on goal when a left-wing corner was flicked on and the unmarked Kaiyne Woolery headed straight at Collins ten yards out.

Chaplin then looked to have sprinted through on goal but his shot from just inside the box was impressively blocked by defender Lee O'Connor.

Barnsley's first shot on target, in the 30th minute, came from Dominik Frieser who – after Cauley Woodrow beat the goalkeeper to a Kane pass and hooked the ball to the Austrian – saw a week effort from ten yards out cleared off the line by George Ray.

Woodrow then flicked the ball on to Frieser near halfway and he raced down the left flank before pausing then crossing for Woodrow whose header was sent narrowly wide of the bottom right corner.

Tranmere had another big chance to take the lead just before the break when Woolery beat Mads Andersen on the right and sent in a low cross which Michal Helik could not intercept and it fell to James Vaughan who shot straight at Collins from the middle of the box.

Ismael took Frieser off at the break and brought on Thomas. The Reds took the lead in the 59th minute when, after a short corner, Chaplin laid the ball off to Kane whose good cross from the left of the box was powerfully headed home by Helik eight yards out.

Ismael then brought on Toby Sibbick – for his first Barnsley appearance since 2019 – and Victor Adeboyejo, with Michael Sollbauer and Chaplin coming off.

Former Barnsley player Otis Khan curled a 30-yard free-kick well over the crossbar for Tranmere. Woolery then volleyed over from ten yards out on the left of the box after a free-kick from the right was flicked on.

The Reds almost doubled their lead with ten minutes left but, following a Kane free-kick, Styles' shot hit Adeboyejo and went wide.

Sibbick made an excellent last-ditch clearance when a Woolery cross looked set to be tapped in in the 91st minute. The Tranmere goalkeeper came up for the resulting corner but it was cleared.

Woodrow could have made it 2-0 in injury-time when he was gifted the ball by Manny Monthe and was clean through but his shot from the right of the box was saved.

Woodrow eventually netted when Thomas was tripped by Jay Spearing and the penalty-taker fired in his tenth goal of the season.
