Former Barnsley captain Mike Bahre's contract has been cancelled by mutual consent.

The 25-year-old German midfielder has recovered from groin surgery and reached an agreement with the Reds to leave Oakwell.

Bahre joined from Hannover 96 in 2018 to re-unite with his former coach Daniel Stendel and helped Barnsley to promotion from League One.

He was made captain at the start of last season but soon lost the armband to Alex Mowatt then new head coach Gerhard Struber did not play him regularly and told him he could leave the club last summer.

Struber has since been replaced by Valerien Ismael, who confirmed to the Chronicle earlier in the week that Bahre was looking to leave the club.

Bahre played 69 games for Barnsley and scored three goals.
