The Reds have been linked with Randers midfielder Tosin Kehinde and Wigan Athletic left-back Tom Pearce but, although both have been considered, neither are currently thought to be imminent targets.
Barnsley have tried to avoid loan deals in recent years but, with time running out in the window, they may have to do so today – possibly with a view to a permanent deal.
The Reds are also likely to loan out some fringe players but are focusing first on the incoming signings.
After Herbie Kane was loaned to Oxford yesterday, the only senior central midfielders are Romal Palmer, Josh Benson and Callum Styles – who is also an option at left wing-back along with Ben Williams and Jordan Williams.
