Barnsley came within minutes of a shock win over Championship leaders Fulham but had to settled for a 1-1 draw.

Carlton Morris’ controversial penalty late in the first half was cancelled out after 86 minutes.

The Reds moved up a place to 22nd and are four points off safety.

Barnsley delivered a wholehearted, mature and committed performance to match their high-flying visitors for much of the game.

Fulham did have the better chances – including an open goal miss in injury-time – but struggled for most of the game to break down a resilient Reds backline.

Poya Asbaghi made one change from the team that drew with Stoke in midweek, as Matty Wolfe came in for the injured Callum Styles. Barnsley played a 4-2-3-1 formation with Remy Vita, Amine Bassi and Domingos Quina in attacking midfield behind lone striker Carlton Morris.

Runaway leaders Fulham started on top and, after a shot by Aleksandar Mitrovic was blocked in the box by Michal Helik, the same player cleared off the line from Bobby Reid who had swapped passes with Fabio Carvalho in the box after bursting down the left wing.

Fulham then opened their hosts up with an excellent move which saw Mitrovic spread a pass out to the left wing where Antonee Robinson and Reid swapped passes before Harry Wilson backheeled the ball to Carvalho who fired wide from 20 yards.

After absorbing pressure in the first 20 minutes, Barnsley began to get into the game as they pressed well, defended solidly and attacked with confidence.

Mads Andersen headed a left-wing free-kick by Bassi well over the bar then Morris dragged a long-range shot well wide before Vita’s header in the Fulham box was easily caught by the goalkeeper.

Wolfe then had a shot 15 yards out in the Fulham box – after Vita brought down a Kitching cross – but it hit Morris and lofted up for the goalkeeper to catch. Vita shot wide from 25 yards after Brittain brilliantly beat Robinson.

Brad Collins made his first save in the 41st minute as he got down well to his left to deny Carvalho from about ten yards after another good move on the left of the Barnsley box.

The Reds got a penalty seconds later as Morris robbed Tosin of the ball and sprinted into the box before going down. There did not look to be much contact but referee Tim Robinson, after advice from his linesman, pointed to the spot. Morris slammed home the spot-kick to become the Reds’ top-scorer in the league this season with five.

Mitrovic then headed wide from a right-wing cross before, at the other end, Morris could have made it 2-0 after latching onto a fine Quina pass on the right of the box and lifting a shot over the goalkeeper from a tight angle only for Tim Ream to clear off the line.

Carvalho missed another chance two minutes after the interval as he blazed over from 15 yards out after touches by half-time substitute Tom Cairney and Mitrovic, following a weak clearance by Helik.

Reid then fired over from just inside the area after Kitching failed to cut out a Cairney pass and Wilson got into the box then pulled the ball back.

Quina shot over from just inside the box against his former club then as the game quietened down worth Fulham having plenty of the ball but not creating much.

The leveller came when Cairney was quickest to win a loose ball against substitutes Romal Palmer and Josh Benson then Carvalho found Wilson who curled into the top left corner from 15 yards out.

Wilson should then have won it in injury-time but headed wide four yards out with the goal gaping four yards out after Carvalho crossed from the left when Mitrovic went down after a Helik tackle.
