SONNYBOY Hughes won the National Development Championships in Birmingham.

The 17-year-old from Darfield, competing at 54kg, won his semi-final on a split decision, with four out of five judges giving him the win.

In the final, he forced a stoppage in the first round after putting his opponent down three times.

His father Jason said: “It’s a brilliant achievement.

“His training team are putting in a challenge for the Yorkshire belt.

“We want to be looking at a GB squad for him in the future. He just needs to keep working hard and winning.”

Sonnyboy is also a successful middle distance and cross country runner, winning regional medals as well as the National Relay Championships.

His dad said: “He’s very talented.

“He is very good at running and boxing so he will have a difficult decision in the future about which one he chooses.

“But we will support him whichever sport he chooses and we think he has a bright future.”
