THE 36TH annual Wombwell 5 road race took place on Sunday.

Kingstone Runners organised the event with a record number of 458 finishers.

Despite a slight detour due to road resurfacing on Illsley Road in Darfield, Barnsley AC’s Gareth Cooke earned second place – just four seconds behind the winner. He set a PB by 28 seconds with 26-17.

Club-mate Josh Bird also posted a PB of 26-48 to finish third.

Cooke and Bird, along with Chris McNicholas who also ran a PB with 31-07, took the men’s team prize.

Naomi Drakeford finished as second woman and knocked 91 seconds off her previous best with 29-29.

Naomi, along with Gail Colville and Beth Massey, claimed the first women’s team prize.

Ben Hopson’s time of 42-16 was nine seconds quicker than his PB at last year’s race. First over65 woman went to Jenny Wakeman in a time of 39-12.

Andrew Pearson was first back for Penistone Footpath Runners in 30-13, which gained him first place in the over55 category and 26th overall.

Bill Phillips and Keith Gordon were first and second in the over75 category with times of 40-08 and 41-06 respectively. Phillips set an over75 club record over five miles.

Barnsley Harrier Katie Roberts won the over40 women’s category with Steve Frith first over 70 man. Kelly Ford was second over45 woman.

Joy Benson was the only Barnsley AC member at Snake Lane 10.

She completed the ten-mile course around Pocklington in the Yorkshire Wolds in a time of 1-53-24.
