A KARATE kid from Barnsley is punching well above his weight - beating off black belts and older children to come third in a national competition.

Six-year-old Mayon Jayawickrama beat off rivals in the under-tens’ Ippon Kumite category at the National Karate Championships.

The Worsbrough Common Primary pupil, of Wall Street, Barnsley, also reached the quarter finals in the Kata under-16s’ category at the national event which took place in Birmingham on May 6.

Mayon is a member of Barnsley Shotokan Karate Club and is under the careful instruction of Mick and Lynn Padgett.

The club doesn’t usually allow children to start learning the martial art until they are seven but an exception was made for Mayon who showed great talent from an early age.
