Patrick Schmidt has left Barnsley after three years to return to previous club Admira Wacker.

The Austrian striker joined in 2019 and made 41 appearances but only four were league starts.

He scored in injury-time in the wins over Millwall and Nottingham Forest in 2019/20, with the latter keeping the Reds up.

He has spent the last 18 months out on loan at first SV Ried in Austria then Barnsley's then 'sister club' Esbjerg in the Danish second division.

Schmidt tweeted: "I want to thank the Barnsley fans for there massive support during my time at Barnsley .

"I‘ve enjoyed every second of wearing this shirt and will keep moments like our ‚Great Escape‘ in 2020 in my mind for ever.

"I also want to thank my team mates, coaches and all the people working for the club for creating a good atmosphere at Oakwell.

"I will leave the club as a player but will stay as a fan for ever. All the best for the future to everyone!"
