A BARNSLEY charity has nominated a pub team for a Proud of Barnsley award for their genuine care and commitment to the community that they serve.

Barnsley Hospital Charity has put forward general manager Matt Horn and his team at the Crown and Anchor at Barugh Green in the Love Where You Live category after the pub chose the charity’s Make a Memory Foundation as their fundraising cause at the beginning of 2022.

The team has been raising money for the cause since then having already raised over £2,000 and with more fundraising events planned for this year.

Jane Mills from Barnsley Hospital Charity said: “Matt and his team of staff are some of the nicest people you could meet.

“They genuinely care about the community they serve.

“As we know over the last few years things haven’t been easy with the Covid-19 pandemic and then the cost of living crisis but they have really tried to rally round and help lift community spirits with amazing events and activities whilst also trying to ensure that the team of 30 local people were able to keep their jobs.

“The team put endless hours of planning in as well as delivering the community events many of which are free and they take the time to ensure that everyone has an excellent experience, genuinely caring and going over and above expectations.

“The team selected Barnsley Hospital Charity as their charity of the year and were so committed to helping the cause making a difference to our older patients and those living with dementia.

“So far the team have raised in excess of £2,000 which is fantastic and have even more plans for 2023.

“We see this as a community anchor institution different to other establishments this is what sets the team apart.”

Matt said: “We are very much a venue that caters for the whole family and the whole team are committed to serving the community.

“We chose the hospital charity because it really is the centre point of the town, it’s close to where we are and everyone has a story to tell about Barnsley Hospital and we have all been there at some point.

“We did three big events last year and are planning to do the same this year.

“The next one is Word on the Street on July 15 which is a craft beer, street food and live music event.

“Such a lot of hard work goes into the events from my whole team they put so much into it. One of the team, assistant manager Reece Dodson organised the firework event last year and did a fantastic job. They make my job easy.

“After Covid we really wanted to re-engage with the community and doing these events, which are all free, we feel it’s a great way of doing this.

“It’s really nice to be nominated a big thank you back to Jane and her team at the charity who have really helped us by coming along to the events and we love helping them. We are all really buzzing when we count the money we have raised for them. It is brilliant to make a difference and it’s massively rewarding.”
