HIGHAM CC gained promotion off the penultimate ball of the season.

They started the day fifth in Division Four of the South Yorkshire League, eight points outside the three promotion places.

But they knew that a win in their last game – a fortnight after the other sides finished – would mean they would overtake fellow Barnsley club Wombwell Main in third.

The visitors Sheffield Collegiate batted first and made 132 for nine.

Dairen Hirst-Spalding took five wickets – four clean bowled – and Gareth Kilburn three.

Higham lost regular wickets but won with seven down and one ball left.

George Deegan made 47 not out then Kilburn hit the winning runs with a four.

Captain Greg Walton said: “It’s a fantastic achievement by everyone at the club and it’s been a real team effort.

“More than 20 players have made a contribution at various points of the season which shows the strength in depth we are building on the field.

“In amongst that we have been able to been able to give first team debuts to two junior players who have both made significant contributions.

“We have a solid platform to keep moving forward on the field and our young players will be the key to future success. We are now looking forward to next season and the next chapter in the club’s development.”

Green Moor 2nd XI were dismissed for 109 in a three-wicket loss to Handsworth 2nd XI in Division Six.
