Barnsley Council has purchased the Cryne family’s half of Oakwell with the football club signing a 30-year lease at the stadium.

The council, last year, became the sole owner of Oakwell Community Assets Limited (OCAL), which owns the stadium and land around it – having been joint owners with the Crynes since 2003.

The club has signed a 30-year lease at the stadium and the council is set to invest money to make improvements to the ground.

There is understood to have been less than five years left on the current lease, with previous chairman Paul Conway holding discussions with other clubs about moving away from Barnsley.

This is the ‘big and exciting news’ that previous Reds chief executive Khaled El-Ahmad told fans was coming last season, before leaving for Minnesota United late last year.
