BARNSLEY under-21s beat Coventry City 3-1 at Oakwell on Tuesday afternoon.

Goals from Aiden Marsh, Aaron Atkinson and an own-goal were enough to give the Reds the win.

A Coventry trialist scored a consoltation goal late on.

First team players Barry Cotter, Robbie Cundy, Josh Benson, Aiden Marsh and Conor Grant all started the match on the Oakwell pitch.

Rogan Ravenhill in the Reds goal made a great save from Coventry’s Aidan Dausch five minutes in and claimed well from the resulting corner.

Barnsley took the lead in the eighth minute after two first-team players combined.

Cotter, playing at left-wing-back crossed the ball in for Marsh, who calmly headed the ball past Daniel Rachel in the Coventry net.

Further efforts from Cotter, Marsh, Cundy and a trialist looked to test the ‘keeper before half time but to no avail.

The Reds made it 2-0 65 minutes in, after Benson’s superb through ball found Aaron Atkinson who slotted home to double Barnsley’s advantage.

Ten minutes before the end of the game, the young Reds extended their lead.

Benson found Marsh on the wing who tried to play a one-two with the midfielder into the box.

However, he found a Coventry defender who put the ball into the back of his own net.

Bradley Stretton almost grabbed a consoltation goal for the visitors before the full-time whistle but his effort skimmed the post and went wide.

A Coventry trialist then did pull one back, as he calmly slotted past Ravenhill in goal.
