Cricket lovers will be jumping on their bikes in a gruelling three-day cycling challenge to raise money for Sheffield Children's Hospital and Rockingham Cricket Club.

Mark Wilkinson, 40, of Monk Bretton, will be tackling the 217-mile trip from Southport to Hornsea on March 28 along with six other cricket club members.

They will be travelling along the Trans Pennine Trail to raise funds for the hospital charity and to buy a new scoreboard at the cricket ground in Hoyland Common.

Mark, of Pinehall Drive, chose the charity after staff at the hospital saved the life of his son Owen, ten.

Owen, who is a pupil at Mapplewell Primary, was treated by surgeons after a fall in the school playground caused a major bleed on his brain when he was eight.

"We didn't find out until after the operation, but Owen had about 30 minutes to live, it was pretty touch and go. The staff were fantastic," Mark said.

"We know we are going to put our bodies through it and it's for two good causes."
