Barnsley got their first win of pre-season after edging out Coventry City 3-1 at Oakwell.

Goals from Stevie Mallan, Stefan Payne and Tom Bradshaw sealed victory over the League Two side.

Barnsley had the first effort on goal with Mallan's effort looping just wide following a deflection.

Midfield partner George Moncur was the next to try his luck but his 25-yard effort was gathered by Lee Burge.

Payne then chose to shoot when strike partner Jacob Brown was in a better position.

Barnsley went ahead moments later, though, when Mallan smashed into the top corner from the edge of the box.

Nick Townsend then had to be alert to push away an effort at the other end before Jason McCarthy dragged wide after a storming run from right-back.

Jodi Jones then forced a diving save from Townsend with a 25-yard drive.

Barnsley built up another neat attack which finished with Moncur's shot being deflected for a corner.

A marauding run from McCarthy resulted in Barnsley doubling their lead after 40 minutes.

The right-back's effort was palmed out by Burge but Payne followed in for an easy finish.

Coventry got one back on 54 minutes when Stuart Beavon stumbled through on goal and lifted the ball over Townsend.

Andy Yiadom then produced fantastic skill to dance around challenges in the box and fire just wide.

Barnsley's lead was restored on 67 minutes when substitute Bradshaw scrambled home after Isgrove had darted a shot across the box.
