Barnsley Tennis Club are celebrating being named Yorkshire Club of the Year for 2018.

The award was presented by Lawn Tennis Association deputy president David Rawlinson at a regional British Tennis Awards event in Garforth.

The Wilthorpe-based club has recently undergone a refurbishment costing more than £500,000 to add three new courts while they have more than 100 children in their junior section.

Chairman Chris Day said: “The British Tennis Awards are always keenly contested and, with 165 clubs in Yorkshire, it is a tremendous achievement to have come out on top.

“We are particularly delighted that this award recognises the progress we have made in transforming our facilities, growing our membership and our ongoing commitment to junior development. The club will now go forward for regional and possibly national recognition in the awards.”
