Michael Sollbauer has left Barnsley FC for German second tier club Dynamo Dresden.

The 31-year-old centre-back joined the Reds in January last year, but has spent most of that time away from his wife and young son during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Sollbauer played 61 games for the Reds, playing a crucial role in keeping them up last season. But, in 2021, he has not been guaranteed a place in the first 11 as he shared the role on the right of the back three with Toby Sibbick.

Co-chairman Paul Conway told the club's website: "The board of directors at Barnsley Football Club would like to thank Michael for his incredible service to the club for the last two seasons. Michael provided incredible commitment to the club and set a great example of professionalism for the entire squad. When Michael asked to be able to return to Europe to reunite with his family, we absolutely had to reciprocate his professionalism and allow this move. We will all be following Sole in his new journey and wish him and his family the best."

Winger Luke Thomas is expected to join League Two Bristol Rovers on a season-long loan.
