ONLY three areas in Barnsley have coronavirus rates less than 400 as the town’s figures have rocketed in the last month.

The overall positive case rate for the town is 738.5 per 100,000 residents - and eight villages have rates of more than 800.

Wombwell North’s figures are well above 1,100 and are the highest in the town at 1,240.3 per 100,000 residents.

Elsewhere in the borough, Athersley, Monk Bretton, Honeywell, Barnsley Town and Park Road, Dodworth, Wombwell South and Worsbrough and Kendray all have high rates above 800.

On the opposite side of the scale, Bolton-upon-Dearne, Silkstone, Hoylandswaine and Cawthorne, and Brierley and Grimethorpe all have rates less than 400 per 100,000 residents.

Youngsters across Barnsley have some of the highest rates for their age groups in the country - with school-aged children, between ten and 14 and 15 and 19, all having rates of more than 1,900 per 100,000 residents.
