Ian Richards has left Penistone Church after 12 years in charge to join Stocksbridge Park Steels with long-serving player Brett Lovell replacing him.

Richards led Church into the NCEL Premier Division, with two promotions, and they won the League Cup while having further promotion pushes thwarted due to Covid-19.

His final game was a 1-0 Barnsley derby loss to Athersley Rec on Wednesday, which was followed by Richards' move to higher-league Stocksbridge.

In a statement, Penistone said: “The football club accepted the resignation of first team manager Ian Richards.

“When the dust has settled there is no doubt we’ll have more to say and add on Ian’s tremendous spell at the helm of our club.

“For now we thank Ian for all he’s done and we wish him the very best of luck in the future."
