A RECENTLY-retired headteacher has won an award which celebrates people who have contributed and had a positive impact on young people.

Julie Allen MBE, the former head at Birkwood Primary School, won the Brian W Hicks Memorial Shield for services to youth at the Brass Band England awards last month.

During her career she put music at the heart of the school, believing passionately that music had a positive impact on school life and the local community.

Esther Sutton, the music lead at Birkwood Primary, said: “All of us at Birkwood are so proud of Julie.

“Her passion for music education, community and opportunity has enabled so many of our children to engage in high-quality music making.

“Julie’s commitment to our families is an inspiration to those of us who try our very best to continue this outstanding brass-playing legacy.”
