MORE than four tonnes of food - equivalent to almost 10,000 meals - was donated to Barnsley Foodbank Partnership during a Tesco donation event.
The supermarket’s Christmas collection scheme saw Hoyland, Penistone and Stairfoot Tesco stores take part to donate ‘trolleys upon trolleys’ of food for emergency parcels.
The equivalent to 9,595 meals were donated by Barnsley residents.
A spokesperson for Barnsley Foodbank Partnership, said: “Within the first hour, the donation trolley was already getting full.
“It’s been a tricky few years, so it’s incredibly humbling to see all of the kind donations people are giving to us.
“It’s great to see the volunteers back too, with Covid-19 putting a stop to it for last year’s collection.
“We’re so grateful for everyone’s hard work and kindness.”
We have been at the heart of our community, every week, since 1858. The town and its people have changed dramatically since then but the Chronicle has been a constant.
It’s our belief that news should be available to everyone regardless of their circumstance. But we need a little helping hand to do so.
Production Editor, Ashley Ball, said: "In an ever changing media world, it’s important that news is reported correctly and without any hidden agenda.
Your support allows us to keep holding decision-makers to account and report on everything that happens in the town, good or bad, fairly."
