Barnsley suffered a miserable 2-0 home defeat to Blackpool in their first game since their relegation and the exit of Poya Asbaghi.

The visitors took the lead late in the first half then doubled it midway through the second, while creating the better chances after a poor home side who looked broken.

The Reds remain bottom of the Championship with two games to play.

Caretaker Martin Devaney, in charge following the exit of Asbaghi over the weekend, made three changes from the side that lost at Huddersfield on Friday and was officially relegated.

Loanees Amine Bassi, Domingos Quina and Claudio Gomes were at the game but their deals have been cancelled. Isaac Christie-Davies made his first Reds start while Jasper Moon and Callum Styles also came into the team. Teenagers Aiden Marsh, from Monk Bretton and Amir Ariely, from Israel, were on the bench.

The Reds played 3-5-2 with Moon alongside Liam Kitching and Mads Andersen in a back three while Styles and Christie-Davies joined Matty Wolfe in midfield then Carlton Morris was paired up front with Cauley Woodrow.

Blackpool had the first chance when Charlie Kirk’s right-wing corner was headed towards goal by Marvin Ekpiteta and ex-Red Kenny Dougall flicked it on a few yards out but it hit his former team-mate Jack Walton in goal and stayed out.

Remy Vita then smashed over 15 yards out on the left of the box after Callum Brittain swapped passes with Woodrow and crossed from the right.

The Reds almost scored an own goal in the 20th minute when, after Wolfe lost the ball, Dougall it to the left of the six-yard box for Kirk whose volleyed cross appeared to come off Brittain and was going in before Walton got down to his left to save well.

Christie-Davies sent a low shot straight at the goalkeeper from just inside the box on 35 minutes.

The visitors took the lead when Jake Beesley lifted the ball over the home defence who were totally exposed with two Blackpool players clean through. Owen Dale raced onto it, cut back past Kitching’s attempted sliding tackle and curled into the top left corner eight yards out.

Early in the second half, Beesley headed over from a tight angle at the back post from a James Husband cross then, at the other end, Woodrow’s deflected shot was pushed over by the goalkeeper after fine passes by Brittain and Christie-Davies.

A Blackpool counter-attack ended with Walton pushing away a powerful Dale shot from the right of the box.

The second goal came midway through the second half when Dougall’s left-wing free-kick was headed back across goal by Ekpiteta and volleyed in from close-range by Oliver Casey.

It should have been 3-0 soon after when the goalkeeper’s long kick put Jerry Yates clean through but he sliced wide of Walton then Beesley hit the left post from a tight angle on the right.

Devaney brought on Will Hondermarck, to play right wing-back with Brittain in central midfield, and young striker Marsh.

Wolfe smashed a 20-yard effort off the crossbar in the 80th minute then Brittain fired over 12 yards out after a corner was cleared to him.
