AN Elsecar woman is set to complete the Yorkshire Three Peaks Challenge to raise money for Barnsley Hospice.

Helen Wood, 30, of Foundry Street, will attempt to do the 24-mile walk in just 12 hours with her two dogs Lana and Lorek, in memory of her mum Dawn, who was cared for at the hospice during her final weeks.

“There’s lots of pressure - I am a walker but it will be hard going, and I’m doing it independently so I’m not relying on anyone,” she said.

“Anything can happen out there, you could get lost or the weather could be bad, but I like that pressure.”

Helen has chosen to do the walk with her two dogs because they go with her wherever she goes, and also because her mum was an animal lover.

“The dogs will enjoy it, they’re little athletes, but I think they’ll sleep for a week afterwards.”

She has previously raised over £1,300 in a charity horse ride of Chatsworth House, a place Dawn loved, and hopes to raise more funds this time around to keep the hospice going.

“My target will be around £200 but I would love to raise more.”
