BARNSLEY Central MP Dan Jarvis has blasted ministers for failing to level up the town with similar-sized - but more prosperous - areas in the country.

Dan Jarvis challenged the Secretary of State for Levelling Up - Michael Gove - on his department’s ‘unfair’ funding formula that will see South Yorkshire lose out on millions of pounds a year.

This issue has been exacerbated by a miscalculation in funding, according to Dan, meaning the region will receive less money than it was entitled to.

He described the situation as ‘outrageous’ and it comes just a week after Mr Gove visited the town following an invitation from Barnsley East MP Stephanie Peacock.

“Time and time again this government has let our communities down - it’s outrageous that our residents will lose out on even more money,” Dan said.

“Currently Cornwall are on track for £229 per head while we will get £33 - I don’t begrudge Cornwall a penny of the funding they are set to receive, but we meet the same criteria, we should get our fair share too.

“My constituents deserve a fair deal and I hope the Secretary of State will work closely with South Yorkshire’s MPs and our regional mayor to make this happen.”
