A young Barnsley side drew 2-2 at League Two Harrogate Town on Wednesday evening in their penultimate friendly of pre-season.

The hosts took the lead then Aiden Marsh and Jasper Moon netted either side of the break before Harrogate levelled.

None of the players who started against Nottingham Forest on Saturday were involved as Michael Duff made wholesale changes.

Teenage strikers Fabio Jalo and Aiden Marsh started up front while Jordan Williams returned from injury to play on the right of the back three.

Harrogate had the first chance, Matty Daly firing wide from 15 yards out via a deflection off Nicky Cadden who started a game for the first time after his signing but came off after half an hour in a pre-planned change.

Barnsley could have taken the lead when Jalo brilliantly flicked Williams’ low clearance into the path of Luke Thomas who cut past a defender and shot for the bottom left corner but the goalkeeper made a good low save.

Seconds later, the Reds conceded their first open play goal of pre-season as a long ball put Max Wright clean through and he lobbed Jack Walton before tapping into the empty net.

Wright should have made it 2-0 soon after when the ball broke for him 12 yards out and he shot wide of the bottom left corner.

Jalo was then played through by a long ball and crashed a shot from a tight angle on the left of the box into the side netting.

Marsh should have scored from six yards out after Thomas robbed a defender on the right wing and sent in a low cross.

But he netted minutes later when, after a right-wing cross by Williams resulted in a goalmouth scramble, he rifled into the bottom right corner after having two efforts blocked.

Williams, who was excellent, was replaced at half-time by Danny Benson.

The Reds took the lead in the 59th minute when Jasper Moon stooped to head a left-wing corner into the bottom right corner.

Alex Pattison should have levelled when he was put clean through but his shot cannoned off the post then Jack Muldoon shot wide from five yards out when he looked certain to net.

Pattison got the leveller after a long ball was flicked on and he was put clean through to beat Walton.

Substitute Jack Butterfill almost won it in injury-time with a volley from Thomas’ free-kick but the goalkeeper saved well from the powerful effort.
