JOSH Benson and Matty Wolfe are both injury doubts for Barnsley’s game against Cheltenham Town on Saturday but Michael Duff believes he has strength in depth in central midfield.

Both Benson, who started the opening day loss at Plymouth, and Wolfe, who came off the bench, picked up knocks in training this week and will be assessed before the game.

Herbie Kane is out for about another month with a groin problem.

Luca Connell and Callum Styles also started in the midfield three at Plymouth.

The other options are Luke Thomas, who came off the bench in Devon, as well as youngsters Will Hondermack, Joe Ackroyd and Jordan Helliwell who have started five times between them for the club.

Head coach Duff told the Chronicle: “We have enough bodies to cover.

“It’s not ideal, you don’t want people injured. Josh and Wolfie are both good players and hopefully they will both come through the next few days.

“They are both contact injuries which you can’t really control.

“We have enough underneath with some of the younger ones.

“If they have to come in for a game or two, they can hold an end up.”

Barnsley’s midfield three at Plymouth was debutant Connell, Styles and Benson. They struggled to maintain control of the ball in a poor team performance.

Duff said: “They are three very very good footballers.

“Sometimes it’s just about understanding each other and building a relationship.

“There were times when all three went for the ball.

“It will come with time.”
