Barnsley bowed out of the EFL Cup despite a gutsy display in a Yorkshire derby at Premier League Leeds United which finished 3-1.

The hosts surged into a 2-0 lead but Mads Andersen pulled one back then Callum Styles missed a penalty just before the break. The hosts netted again early in the second half but were beaten in the second round fixture.

Barnsley made five changes from the side that lost 3-0 at home to Wycombe Wanderers in League One on Saturday. Jack Walton, Jordan Helliwell, Clarke Oduor, Conor McCarthy and James Norwood came in for Brad Collins, Jordan Williams, Luca Connell, Robbie Cundy and Jack Aitchison. Slobodan Tedic was on the bench for the first time.

Leeds made nine changes from their 3-0 Premier League win over Chelsea on Saturday but had about £150million of signings on the bench.

Barnsley began well with former Leeds man Liam Kitching heading wide from a left-wing free-kick by Josh Benson in the second minute then, in the third, Devante Cole saw a shot saved just inside the box.

But the hosts got control of possession and took the lead on 21 minutes when the ball broke to Luis Sinisterra who rounded Styles and impressively found the bottom right corner from 25 yards.

It was almost 2-0 seconds later when Sam Greenwood was played in on the right of the box but Walton made a fine one-on-one stop.

Andersen pulled one back when he brilliantly headed Benson’s left-wing free-kick into the bottom right corner.

The Reds had a golden chance to make it 2-2 on 42 minutes when Styles ran onto a Kitching pass in the box from the left wing and was upended by Adam Forshaw. Styles took the penalty himself but hit the foot of the right post.

Leeds almost made it 3-1 early in the second half when Crysencio Summerville cut in from the right and shot just wide of the bottom left corner from about ten yards out.

Leeds wanted a penalty for handball by Benson then Styles claimed for another after he was found by Devante Cole who had brilliantly beaten two men.

It was 3-1 on 57 minutes when McCarthy was tackled deep in his half by Joe Geldhardt then Sinisterra ran into the box and cross for Summerville to flick cleverly to Klich who curled a 15-yard shot into the top right corner,.

Tedic came on for Norwood with Helliwell and Oduor replaced by Williams and Matty Wolfe.

It was almost 4-1 when Rodrigo fired over ten yards out from a low left-wing free-kick by fellow substitute Marc Roca.

Tedic could have made it a nervy finale in the 89th minute but headed Luca Connell’s left-wing cross wide from eight yards out.
