Sport in Barnsley was almost all cancelled at the weekend due to freezing temperatures which left pitches unplayable.

Very few local football games took place. All the Barnsley teams in the Northern Counties East League and the County Senior League saw their games called off on Saturday.

The Barnsley Sunday League also saw the entire fixture list wiped out but Crown Inn Newhill won 15-1 over near neighbours Red Lion Wath in one of two games in the Mexborough League.

All of those leagues are due to re-start over the weekend, weather permitting, with all but the NCEL then stopping until the New Year.

A handful of junior games went ahead on Sunday but Barnsley Women’s match was called off.

Barnsley’s rugby union, tennis and hockey clubs all saw their games cancelled.

The Barnsley 5k ParkRun in Locke Park went ahead on Saturday while the Penistone ParkRun was held for the 100th time, and some other local races took place.
