THE co-owner of Barnsley Women’s Football Club wants girls and women to have the same opportunities as men when it comes to playing football.

Steve Gates, 66, from Darton, is embarking on a fundraising mission in a plea to allow girls to keep playing football without having to worry about the cost.

Steve hopes to also fund sessions for those living with a disability - in a bid to be as inclusive as possible, and provide everyone with the same opportunity.

He said: “We are the only girls and women’s football club in Barnsley, and that’s great obviously, but we’d love for girls’ football to be more accessible to those who are interested in football and would like to take it up but perhaps aren’t sure how to go about it.”

There is now a voting station in Tesco’s for people to make a donation which will go towards supporting girls’ football within the local community.

Steve added: “The money we raise will go towards funding a trip to York for the girls, as well as funding the sessions, too.

“We hope in the near future that we can expand these sessions and get even more people involved.”
