A FABIO Jalo brace helped Barnsley under 18s thrash Wigan Athletic 4-0 at the weekend, extending their lead at the top of Professional Development League.

The Reds almost took the lead in the second minute at the Oakwell training ground as Jalo received the ball 25 yards from goal before running at the opposition, but his effort was easily saved by the Wigan ‘keeper.

It didn’t take long for Tom Harban’s side to get the opener though, as Jalo calmly put the ball in the back of the net after a quick goal kick from the hosts.

Barnsley doubled their lead before half time as Hayden Pickard’s cross was inadvertently turned home by a Wigan defender.

Just minutes earlier Pickard had cleared the ball off the line with a sliding block.

The young Reds continued to dominate in the second half and got their reward when Charlie Hickingbottom tapped the ball into the back of the net after an inswinging free kick was spilled by the Latics’ goalie.

Jalo grabbed his second and Barnsley fourth in the closing stages as he skinned his man in the right wing before curling a great effort into the goal.

It leaves Barnsley ten points clear of neighbours Sheffield United at the top of the game.
