A PARK which has been targeted for several years by deliberate fires has seen a further spike in recent weeks.

Over the last two weeks, South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service have had to attend several blazes - set on Worsbrough Park’s playing area and surrounding fields - with a nearby family centre being put at risk.

Coun Jake Lodge, who represents the Worsbrough ward, has been working to tackle arson attacks.

He said: “I’ve been contacted by residents across several nights in recent weeks in relation to these fires, many of whom are simply fed up.

“I’ve spoken directly with the Barnsley West sergeant and I’m assured that patrols are being stepped up to deter the young people who are doing this.

“My main concern is the safety of local residents who live nearby and the family centre, which is located at the rear of where the fires are being lit, with one stray flame we could lose a lot.’’
