PLANNING permission is being sought to change the use of a large town centre building in order to attract further businesses.

The building, on Peel Street, was formerly used as a snooker bar but is currently vacant.

Planning permission was granted in April 2021 to turn the site into a sports bar.

However, a further application was submitted this week to make the use of the site more flexible to attract more custom.

A report said: “The application relates to a change of use only - no further works are proposed such as external alterations

or the display of advertisements which would require consent.

“Whilst the application responds to market interest by a discount furniture retailer, the proposed application is not intended to be tenant specific and establishing the full range of Class E uses at the site will support the applicant in attracting tenants in the long term.”

A total of ten neighbours have been made aware of the plans with no appeals to date.

Public consultation ends on April 11.
