BARNSLEY LINKED TO POLISH DEFENDER

Barnsley are close to signing free agent Polish defender Kacper Lopata, according to reports.

The 21-year-old former Sheffield United youngster is out of contract after leaving cash-strapped National League club Southend United earlier this month following an alleged breach of contract due to unpaid wages.

The Southend Echo has reported that he is due to sign with Barnsley who will loan him to another National League club, Woking.

The Chronicle has been unable to confirm the reports.

MIDWEEK HOSTS EXETER WIN 5-0

Barnsley’s next opponents Exeter City won 5-0 at home to lowly Accrington Stanley on Saturday.

The Reds had a free weekend after Ipswich Town pulled out of their trip to Oakwell due to international call-ups.

They are due to visit the mid-table Grecians, who have won their last three home games, on Tuesday from 7.45pm.

It will be a second attempt for Barnsley who were in Devon, after making the 260-mile trip, along with hundreds of fans, on January 24 when the game was called off due to a frozen pitch three hours notice.

DYER NETS 3-MINUTE HAT-TRICK

JOSIAH Dyer scored a three-minute hat-trick as Barnsley under 18s took a step closer to securing their league title with a 3-0 win at Colchester United.

The striker opened the scoring with a penalty in the 43rd minute then added two more before half-time.

They are now 15 points clear at the top of the Professional Development League North.

JALO STARS FOR PORTUGAL U18S

Fabio Jalo made a big impact for Portugal under 18s off the bench in their 2-2 draw with Austria.

The 17-year-old Barnsley striker came off the bench and scored then forced an own goal as his team came from 2-0 behind late on.

REDS LOANEES FACE EACH OTHER

Two Barnsley loan players faced each other as Joe Ackroyd’s Buxton won 4-1 at Will Lancaster’s Bradford Park Avenue in the National League North. Both Reds started.

Harrison Nejman, who was loaned out to Guiseley late last week, made his debut from the start in their 1-0 loss at home to Belper Town on Saturday in the Northern Premier League.
