Barnsley have signed goalkeeper Ben Killip.

The 27-year-old was a free agent after rejecting a new contract at Hartlepool United following their relegation from League Two.

He has signed a one-year contract with the Reds having an option to add another year.

Killip was in the Chelsea academy – at the same time as his fellow Reds goalkeeper Brad Collins who is slightly younger – before spending two years at Norwich City then, after a season each at Grimsby and Braintree, moved to Hartlepool in 2019.

He helped them gain promotion from the National League in 2021 then played for them for two seasons in League Two, but was on the bench for almost all of the second half of last season which saw them finish second-bottom.

He returned for the final game of the season, saving a penalty against Stockport County.

Killip told the club website: “I’m delighted to be here. It’s a massive club and they had an amazing season last season and, unfortunately, fell short, but hopefully we can go one better this time.

“I had a couple of phone calls with Tom Fawdry [goalkeeper coach] and got on really well with him; he told me his ideas and beliefs, how he wanted to work, how the goalkeeping group works and what he sees for me for the season going forward, which all aligned with me.

“Hopefully I can come in here and play as many games as I possibly can.”
