Barnsley have appointed Neill Collins as their head coach on a two-year deal.

The 39-year-old Scotsman, who had a long career as a defender, joins from American club Tampa Bay Rowdies in the USL Championship.

Collins began his playing career at Scottish lower league clubs Queen’s Park and Dumbarton before moving to England and winning promotion from the Championship with Sunderland in 2004 and Wolverhampton Wanderers in 2009.

He then spent time at Preston North End and Leeds United for whom he scored an own goal at Oakwell in a 5-2 loss in 2010.

Collins finished his playing career with a five-year stint at Sheffield United, making more than 200 appearances.

He was given his first manager’s job by Tampa in 2018 and won their league in 2021.

Collins replaces Michael Duff who moved to Swansea City last month.
