Jon Stead has been confirmed as Barnsley’s assistant head coach.

He will move with new head coach Neill Collins from the Tampa Bay Rowdies, with current first team coach Martin Devaney also being named as assistant.

In a 19-year career as a striker which saw him play for 13 clubs from the Premier League to National League, Stead netted more than 100 goals - including seven in 11 games against Barnsley.

He was a team-mate of Collins’ at Sunderland early in their careers.

He began his career with Hartford Athletic in the USA before joining Collins at Tampa Bay.

Stead told the club website: “I am extremely excited to be joining Barnsley Football Club. To continue to work with Neill was very important to me so this is the perfect opportunity for me and my family.

“I know the club well; I grew up less than 15 miles from Oakwell and my youngest daughter was born in Barnsley, so I understand the club’s importance to the people of Barnsley and the community. I’m thoroughly looking forward to getting to work.”
