ALMOST £500,000 worth of cannabis was seized by police on Wednesday as officers descended onto the town’s streets for a day of action.

Operation Duxford aims to improve the force’s links within the community, whilst tackling criminal activity across the borough.

Earlier this week, hundreds of officers were on high-patrol across Barnsley arresting 11 people in the process.

Almost 600 cannabis plants were recovered part of a drug haul worth an estimated £480,000.

Four vehicles were seized for not having valid insurance, two weapons were recovered and a number of littering fines and fly-tipping fixed penalty notices were issued.

Chief Superintendent Simon Wanless said: “We want to make this a difficult place for offenders to remain at large.

“We will protect those who are vulnerable and apprehend those who are looking to exploit them through whatever means.”
